Ameren Illinois warns of summer rate increase

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) — Ameren Illinois customers could see higher electric bills this summer as electricity supply prices increase beginning Sunday, June 1.

According to a notice sent to customers, the price of electric supply for residential customers on the Ameren Illinois Basic Generation Service rate will temporarily rise from 8.769 cents per kilowatt-hour to about 11 cents per kilowatt-hour during the summer months.

Ameren says electricity prices remain elevated because of a shortage of available power during periods of high demand and extreme summer temperatures.

The utility company says it does not control or profit from electricity market prices or related fees included on customer bills.

Ameren is encouraging customers to review their electricity supplier, reduce energy usage at home and explore financial assistance programs and payment options.

The City of Carbondale also reminds residents it participates in an electric aggregation program through Homefield Energy.

City officials say Ameren’s summer aggregation rate from June through September 2026 will be $0.11326 per kilowatt-hour, while Homefield Energy’s rate is locked in at $0.11378 per kilowatt-hour for the next 11 months.

Additional information about Carbondale’s aggregation program is available through the city’s website.
