CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — A piece of Cape Girardeau history will be uncovered this week when a time capsule sealed inside the former police station is opened for the first time in more than 50 years.
The Cape Girardeau Police Department said the time capsule was placed in the cornerstone of the former police station at 40 S. Sprigg St. in 1975 by then-Police Chief Gerecke and members of the department.
The capsule has remained sealed since then, preserving items that offer a glimpse into the department and community during that era.
The unveiling is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, June 5, and will be hosted by Community Partnership of Southeast Missouri, the current owner of the historic building.
Community members are invited to attend and see the contents of the time capsule as officials revisit a chapter of Cape Girardeau’s history.
