Severe setup possible leading into Tuesday afternoon and evening
Storms are currently training across southern Illinois, with flash flooding ongoing from Saint Louis down toward Mount Vernon. With additional rounds of storms likely through tonight, flash flooding is likely to develop.
The current areas under a Flood Watch through Wednesday morning are in green below. This is mainly for parts of southeast Missouri and southern Illinois.
This morning the Storm Prediction Center also upgraded most of our viewing area to a Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk for which scattered severe storms will be possible.
The primary threats outside of the flooding and heavy rain will be damaging wind and large hail. Those included in the higher confidence of the damaging wind potential are also those within the Slight risk above.
The large hail risk will mainly include southeast Missouri into parts of southern Illinois toward Carbondale.
Again, there’s a round of storms currently ongoing in southern Illinois, with that round set to dive a bit farther south after about noon – 1 p.m. Monday. As that round somewhat calms after about 5 p.m., another round will move in after about 8-9 p.m. tonight and potentially last overnight into early Wednesday.
