Vienna community school initiative enters second year
VIENNA, Ill., (KBSI) — Vienna’s community schooling initiative, part of a statewide full-service community school program, has entered its second year, with two directors leading the effort.
The initiative, funded by a $5 million federal grant, aims to improve academic achievement, attendance, and climate and culture. Reagan Johnson and Rachel Matekya serve as co-directors, with Matekya bringing experience in curricular improvement and special education.
Matekya has fostered partnerships with schools, families, and community organizations, providing resources and support for students and families. She has also organized clubs and out-of-school time programs.
The community schooling initiative aims to create a supportive and empowering environment for students. Matekya expressed gratitude for the community’s welcome and enthusiasm for the initiative, which she believes is the future of education.
