CARBONDALE, Ill. — The City of Carbondale will celebrate Arbor Day on April 24 with a tree planting ceremony honoring Mayor Carolin Harvey and the nation’s 250th anniversary.
The event is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Founders Park, located behind the Carbondale Police Department.
City officials said the celebration also marks Carbondale’s 45th consecutive year as a Tree City USA community.
As part of the observance, the city’s forestry division will plant a swamp white oak in honor of Harvey.
The Daniel H. Brush Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will also plant a Jefferson elm to commemorate the country’s semiquincentennial.
City Manager Stan Reno said the recognition reflects Carbondale’s continued commitment to sustainability and quality of life.
Officials encouraged residents to attend the event and consider planting trees in their own communities.
