Baptist Health Paducah launches high-risk breast clinic to support prevention and early detection

PADUCAH, Ky., (KBSI) — Baptist Health Paducah has established a High-Risk Breast Clinic to help patients understand their personal risk for breast cancer and take proactive steps toward prevention and early detection.
“With frequent reports about cancer risks, it can be difficult to know what is accurate or personally relevant,” said Dr. Kristen Williams, general surgeon at Baptist Health Medical Group High-Risk Breast Clinic. “When it comes to breast cancer, we can actually be proactive. Women who are high risk have options to lower that risk and to screen more often using advanced testing that can detect early-stage, curable breast cancers.”
The clinic provides individualized prevention strategies, including discussions on lifestyle modifications, medication options to reduce risk, and preventative surgical measures when appropriate. By focusing on education and early screening, the clinic aims to empower patients to take control of their health.
Screening options are tailored to each patient’s specific needs. Some high-risk patients may qualify for alternating mammograms and MRIs every six months, offering more frequent and detailed monitoring.
High-risk patient Amanda Ward said her mother’s positive test for the PALB2 gene prompted her to seek genetic testing and care through the clinic.
“The high-risk clinic has been great for me,” Ward said. “I rotate between mammograms and breast MRIs every six months. Dr. Williams manages my screenings, so if anything changes, it will be caught early. I’m so thankful Baptist offers these services close to home.”
Patients receiving screening mammograms at any Baptist Health facility can also complete a genetic risk assessment to identify possible hereditary cancer risks. Those identified as high risk are referred to a genetic counselor for further evaluation and guidance.
Anyone who believes they may be at an increased risk for breast cancer can schedule an appointment with the High-Risk Breast Clinic at Baptist Health Paducah by calling 270-538-9555.
